A fragment of the Istolliath Maugrillion follows. The Istolliath, whose title means 'Book of Aberrations' in the ancient Elvish, was lost in the sack and burning of the great Library of Aerynth. Written in the waning years of the Age of Kings just before the beginning of the War of Tears, the book was once one volume of the single greatest catalog of beast and monster lore known in the World. Now, only a small portion of its lore remains to stand as a warning to any who would learn;
Istolliath Maugrillionの破片に従う．往古Elvishで’Book of Aberrations’を意味する題名ことIstolliathは，壮大なLibrary of Aerynthの略奪と炎上のなかで失われた．War of Tearsが始まる前における，Age of Kingsの衰えている数年のなかで書かれた同本は，Worldで知られている獣と怪物の，単一的で最も壮大な型録におけるかつての一巻であった．
今や，それの伝承における小さな割り当て分のみが，学ぶであろう人たちにとっての警告として立つために残っている；
"As First Apprentice and trusted scribe to the Loremaster Veland Tvar, it has been my honored duty to catalog the nature of all the living things in the World, from worthiest to foulest. For three dozen years I, Helainur, have roamed the wild and dark spaces of the world, seeking out all kinds of beasts and monstrosities. All along my long road I have gathered hair, scales, or other parts of these great beasts, and learned the ways and languages of those who have wits enough to speak. I shall now relate the nature and ways of the Maugrim, that kind of beast the sons of men call monsters. Despised and feared by all the true children of Pandarrion, the All-Father, some of these creatures are tenacious beasts, while others have a semblance of mind and spirit and have gathered together into clans and tribes, living in a twisted mockery of our High Civilization. All are hostile in the extreme, and quite perilous.
