These massive, horrendous reptiles dwell in the deepest fens and mires, and are so elusive that despite weeks of searching I never actually set eyes on one. I saw evidence of them, however. I found entire groves flattened, and massive mangrove trees shredded by their rough hide, with scales the size of my hand trapped in the wood. I also found entire villages of Skrell, Lizard men, and feral Humans wiped out, killed in moments by the mere presence of these monsters. The wisest Magi and Loremasters have little clue as to the origins of these horrors, but legends attest to their physical prowess and the poisonous, deadly power of their breath or gaze (tales differ on the source of the Basilisk's hideous attack). Some Scholars believe Basilisks are a variety of Drake, but I suspect that the relationship is not so simple. In the nameless ruins guarded by the Scaly Ones I have looked upon great murals and carvings that depict Lizard Men and Basilisks together, attended by serpents and strange, nameless horrors. I believe that Basilisks are great reptiles tainted or changed by the magics of an ancient Reptilian Civilization that some claim predates even our own.
