When the Dark Lords ravaged all Aerynth at the end of the Age of Days, there were some who served them who were born of this world. Many Humans of weak will and dark disposition (failings, alas, all too common to the Sons of Men!) threw themselves at the mercy of the foul invaders, and took up the worship of Demons and fouler things in return for power. The Dread Cult these traitors built operated in secret, working to undermine the efforts of the Grand Alliance through sabotage, betrayal, and terror. None were more feared than the Executioners, powerful Warriors whose wills and bodies had been corrupted by the dark powers they served, turning them into engines of torture and destruction. The Dread Cult was thought destroyed at the end of the War of the Scourge, but since Morloch's return to Aerynth it has revived, and its members now all wear hideous masks in imitation of their new lord and master. Rumors and whispers echo again of masked men slaughtering entire villages, committing atrocities in the name of Chaos.
