In the rocky heights and barren places of the World, the stones themselves sometimes awaken, leading long, solitary lives where centuries pass between each breath. Like the Genies, Grondulkar (the name means "breathing stones") are created when two of the five Universal Elements combine: in this case matter (Earth) infused with consciousness and will (Spirit). While the Dwarves and the murgolems that they and the Sons of men create are also "living stones" of a sort, Grondulkar apparently arise spontaneously, without any Shaper or Crafter to build them. Grondulkar lack the grace, beauty, and intellect of the Genies, but are unbelievably strong. Tough and resilient as the hearts of mountains, Stone Elementals easily crush most foes with the great crystals that serve them as jagged fists. Unlike the Genies, Magi and Summoners have never managed to magically bind these strange beings into service. Some wonder if Grondulkar have minds (as we conceive of them) at all: it is nearly impossible to gain one's attention, and they seem only barely able to perceive living beings at all. Some have theorized that our comings and goings are as the buzzing of gnats and mayflies to these eternal, plodding lords of stone, or perhaps even less. The mighty Grondulkar only seem to take notice of mortals when stones and mountains are wantonly destroyed, and then their wrath is terrible to behold.
