Among the largest and most powerful of all the Beasts of the World, Mammoths (also called "Oliphaunts" by the Sons of Men) are massive, hairy animals, found primarily in the frozen lands of the Uttermost North. Adults stand more than twenty spans high and can reach many tons in weight. When a herd of Mammoth runs, they shake the very earth. Their thick, shaggy hide and dense skin serve to protect Mammoths against the bitter cold of the frozen Northlands, and also make these giants profoundly difficult to wound with point or blade. Mammoths use their long, snakelike noses to gather food or buffet their foes, and their huge mouths boast a pair of ivory tusks, long and cruel enough to gore even a Giant. A Mammoth's kick can crush a lesser beast, and to be trampled by one of these massive beasts is almost certain death. Despite their fearsome appearance, however, Mammoths are for the most part gentle animals (unless goaded into anger), grazing on the sparse vegetation of the tundra. The Giants of the North once rode Mammoths as steeds, and the Dar Khelegur tried to train them as beasts of burden. Despite their inherent cleverness (mammoths are far more intelligent than most beasts), the massive grazers refused to obey Elvish masters, so the High Ice Lords hunted them instead, adorning themselves and all their works with tons of ice-white ivory. The vast herds of Mammoths that roamed the glaciers in Ages past have dwindled, but a few packs still roam in the cold places of the World, their mighty voices trumpeting across the frozen wastes.
Beasts of the Worldの間で，最も広大かつ最も力に満ちているMammothら（Son of MenらによってOliphauntらとも呼ばれる）は，Uttermost Northの氷結した諸土地で主に据えられる，大塊的かつ毛深い動物である．
