Like their cousins the Genies, sylphs (the name derives from the ancient word suilvaen, or Wind Maidens) are elementals, beings composed of only two elements instead of five. Master Channelers learned long ago how to create these creatures, spinning them into existence by weaving the gossamer threads of Air and Spirit together. Sylphs always appear as comely, insubstantial women with musical voices. Their shimmering forms are transparent, and their feet never touch the ground. Magicians conjure sylphs for many reasons apart from their pleasing shape and charming companionship; the Wind Maidens are exceedingly wise beings, renowned for their knowledge of the hidden or obscure, and are blessed with mastery of wind and lightning. Whether used as advisors, messengers, or protectors, sylphs make ideal familiar servants.
