The unenlightened and uneducated presume that Alchemists are just another variety of Wizard, who spend long hours brewing strange potions and distilling chemicals. While we do work long and hard in our laboratories, we are not magicians: we are scholars, and we work not to cast magical spells or effects, but to better understand the basic nature of Life itself. The heathen tribes of the Horwathi Steppes have an ancient saying: "the Blood is the Life." Centuries of trial and experiment by master Alchemists have proven the humble proverb true. Alchemy is the study of Blood, and its power to transmute the basic elements of the universe into Life itself.
For many years, Alchemists have known that the blood that flows in our veins is the medium through which our bodies are kept whole, soft, and limber. Talmiaches of Karaton, the greatest Alchemist who ever lived, was the first to prove that all true living things have some form of blood, be it the red blood of men or beasts, the sap of trees and plants, or the noxious ichor of the Chaos-tainted. Non-living objects like ponds, stones, and metals have no blood, and therefore do not live. Other master Alchemists have since proved that it is the action of the blood that allows living things to digest the elements they consume in the form of food, water, and breath, and thus stay alive.
As there are four elements in the universe, so are there four components to all blood, and the proportion of their mixture will vary from individual to individual and species to species. If you would learn our ancient wisdom, learn well the ingredients, so that their names are as second nature to you.
Maegus, the Spirit Water, is a clear fluid which carries life and youth to all parts of the body. Without water and the maegus to carry it, all living things quickly wither and die.
Halgon, the Healing Unction, is red like the purest flame. It draws in the heat from the sun's fire and directs it throughout the body, melting away sicknesses and refashioning injuries, allowing them to heal.
Timar, the Thought Wine, is the bright blue product of elemental air. Timar allows the will and thought of the Spirit and Mind to travel throughout the body, telling organs to function and limbs to move according to our volition. Timar is the noblest and most critical of all the blood components: a man without water will die in days, but a man without air will die in moments.
Bile, or the Dark Sediment, is the fluid that results when the three ingredients above mix too freely with the earth of which our bodies are composed. All living things create bile as a consequence of their existence, but if their bodies are balanced they will naturally shed their bile and remain pure. Imbalanced beings will slowly accumulate bile in their blood, and must beware of it, for raw bile is pure and potent poison, which can kill anything if the dose is high enough.

ホルワシ草原における異教徒の諸部族には、「血は生命なり」という、古い諺がある。何世紀にもおよぶ、アルケミストたちの諸実験を経て、その諺が真実であることは証明された。アルケミー術は血液の研究と同義であり、同術は、宇宙における基盤の諸元素を生命へ変換させる。
アルケミストたちは、血管の中に流れる血液が、わたしたちの肉体を柔くする媒体であることを、昔から知っていた。カラトーンのタルミアケスは、史上最大のアルケミストである。かれは、すべての生物が、多様な形態の血液をもつことを証明した、最初の人物でもある。ヒトおよび獣における赤い血液、木および草における樹脂、混沌能に汚染された生物がもつ、有害な分泌液にも、共通している。
池と石および金属のような非生物は、血液をもたないため、生きていないといえる。他の熟練したアルケミストたちは、血液がもつ機能を解明した。つまり、血液は、食物と水および空気の形態をとる諸元素を、生物に消化させることで、生物の活動を維持させるのである。
宇宙に４つの元素があることと同様に、血液には４つの成分がある。生物における同諸成分の混合比は、個体ごとおよび分類ごとに異なる。古代の知恵を学ぶなら、諸素材の名前を、あなたにおける第二の性質となるように、よく覚えなさい。
霊水ことマエグス成分は、肉体の全部分において生命と若さを運ぶ、澄んだ液体である。水と同元素を運ぶマエグス成分がなければ、すべての生物が枯れてしまい、死ぬことになる。
治癒聖油ことハルゴン成分は、純粋な炎のように赤い。ハルゴン成分は、太陽の火がもつ熱を肉体へ送りこむことにより、病気および怪我を治し、回復させる。
思考酒ことティマー成分は、元素の風で構成されており、明るくて青い色をもっている。ティマー成分は、霊と心における意思と思考を、全身へ行きわたらせる。そして、肝臓を機能させるうえに、四肢を意図どおりに動作させるための、伝達をおこなう。ティマー成分は、血液成分における全種のなかで、最も高貴かつ最も重要である。なぜなら、水を摂取できないばあい、人は数日で死ぬが、風を摂取できないばあいは、瞬時に死ぬためである。
バイル成分こと暗黒沈殿質は、三種の成分が、肉体を構成する土と不規則に混合して生じる、流動体である。すべての生物は、活動の結果として胆汁を生じさせる。しかし、肉体に均衡がとれていれば、生物は自然に胆汁を排出して、純粋な状態を維持する。不均衡がともなう生物は、血液中で次第に胆汁を蓄積させるため、注意しなければならない。なぜなら、生の胆汁は純粋かつ強力な毒であり、十分な量があれば、どのような生物でも死に至らしめるためである。
